The Ethiopian Tewahedo (means “oneness” or “made one) Church is a native and national Church of Africa. It is one of the oldest churches in the world, if not the oldest.
When one speaks of the Ethiopian Church, one also speaks about the people of Ethiopia. The Church is the source of Ethiopia’s unique civilization.
Ethiopia is the first African nation to appreciate and worship the one true God of the Old Testament and adopt the Judaic element (1000 B.C., Queen of Sheba and Solomon), to embrace Christianity and maintain the doctrine of Christ from the time of the apostles to today.
Many forces have tried to destroy the unique culture of Ethiopia. Among them have been the Portuguese, Catholics, Muslims and the Italians. However, Ethiopia has overcome all dangers that have threatened her and retained her ages-old independence, culture and way of life. This is due to the inseparable union of the church, the people, and their love for freedom. Ethiopia has sustained her right as the Mother of Nations and kept her place in the society of Nations.
The Western Hemisphere branch church was established in 1952. It was elevated to the status of Archdiocese in January, 1979. It is headed by His Eminence Abuna Yesehaq.
